In recent months, Alex Galán has released three documentaries: El reino de los pastores, Xalda. Experiencias de una raza and Galerna y Salea, which focus on the preservation of trades, native breeds and the territory. After a year of intense activity, since he released Salvajes, Alex feels the need for a break to regain inspiration and reconnect with the stories he wants to tell. According to him, it is crucial to stop and return to the origins to find new ideas.
Galán reflects on the lost connection with nature and sovereignty over the territory. He considers it essential to document and preserve the sustainable and serene ways of life that still exist. For him, telling these stories is a responsibility, and he feels that it is crucial to record a more balanced and authentic life. Galán expresses his wish to have lived in a time when the connection with nature was stronger and the pace of life was calmer.
Of his recent works, he highlights Territorio, filmed in Kyrgyzstan with Darko Perić, known for his role in La Casa de Papel. This documentary reflects the life of Kyrgyz shepherds during the winter and addresses themes of renunciation and conflict in a wild environment. In addition, he has worked on a documentary about the last cunqueiros of Degaña, a mother and her son who keep an ancient tradition alive. These projects show Galán’s commitment to local stories that, although they seem small, have a great impact.
The director observes that people committed to preserving breeds, trades and territories do so out of a sense of heritage and belonging. This connection to their home and heritage gives them a special strength and dignity. Through his documentaries, Galán seeks to show the greatness of these stories and foster a greater appreciation for local traditions and self-sufficiency. He believes that in a world increasingly disconnected from its roots, it is essential to remember and value the simplicity and authenticity of traditional life.
